God of War Ragnarok's PC release on Steam has ignited a firestorm of controversy, resulting in a "Mixed" user review score. The source of the outrage? Sony's controversial requirement for a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play the game.
Steam Review Bombing Over PSN Requirement
The PC launch, while highly anticipated, has been met with a wave of negative reviews, many directly attributed to the PSN login mandate. The game currently holds a 6/10 user rating on Steam, a significant drop fueled by this unexpected requirement.
Sony's decision to tie a single-player game to their PSN service has left many players bewildered and frustrated.
While numerous negative reviews cite the PSN requirement as the primary reason for their low scores, some players report successfully playing the game without linking an account. One user commented, "I understand the frustration over the PSN account. It's annoying when single-player games force online features. But I played fine without logging in. It's a shame because these reviews might deter people from an amazing game."
Other reviews highlight technical issues potentially linked to the PSN integration. One player wrote, "The PSN requirement ruined the experience. The game got stuck on a black screen after logging in, and even though I didn't play, it says I played for almost two hours – absurd!"
Despite the negative feedback, positive reviews still exist, praising the game's quality and attributing the negative scores solely to Sony's policy. A positive review stated, "Great story, as expected. The negative reviews are almost entirely about the PSN requirement. Sony needs to address this, otherwise, it's a top-tier PC game."
This isn't the first time Sony has faced this type of backlash. A similar situation unfolded with Helldivers 2, prompting Sony to reverse their PSN account requirement after considerable player outcry. Whether they will do the same for God of War Ragnarok remains to be seen.
