Warner Bros. is building a unified Harry Potter universe, linking the highly anticipated Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the upcoming HBO TV series! Discover the details below.
Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in development and will connect with HBO's Harry Potter series (debuting in 2026). The original game's massive success (over 30 million copies sold) fueled this decision.
David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety that the project involves close collaboration with Warner Bros. Television to create a cohesive narrative. Despite the game's 1800s setting (much earlier than the series), it will share thematic and overarching narrative elements with the show.
While details on the HBO Max series are limited, Casey Bloys (HBO & Max Content CEO) confirmed it will delve into the beloved books. The challenge lies in organically integrating the game and series, avoiding forced connections. The historical gap presents an intriguing opportunity to reveal new Hogwarts lore.
Haddad highlighted Hogwarts Legacy's impact on the franchise's renewed popularity. He noted that the game's success spurred interest across all platforms.
Importantly, J.K. Rowling will not directly manage the franchise (Variety). While Warner Bros. Discovery keeps her informed, Robert Oberschelp (head of global consumer products) stated that any deviation from established canon requires studio approval.
Rowling's controversial comments continue to impact the franchise. The 2023 boycott of Hogwarts Legacy, while unsuccessful in halting sales, underscores the ongoing concerns. However, Warner Bros. assures fans that Rowling's views will not influence the game or the HBO series.
With the HBO series aiming for a 2026 or 2027 release, a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is unlikely to launch earlier. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Widenfels confirmed the sequel's high priority.
Development of such a major game will take time. We predict a 2027-2028 release window. For a more detailed release date prediction, see our related article.
