Sony loosens its grip on PSN account linking for PC games, offering incentives for those who connect.
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Sony announced a strategic shift, eliminating the PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking requirement for several PC titles, starting with Marvel's Spider-Man 2's PC release. This addresses player concerns regarding the mandatory PSN account connection for single-player games. Titles no longer requiring PSN account linking include Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.
However, Sony isn't abandoning its push for PC gamers to join its ecosystem. Account linking will now provide in-game bonuses, such as early suit unlocks in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and resource bundles for games like God of War Ragnarök. The full list of current incentives is detailed below:
PlayStation PC In-Game Content Incentives:
Sony plans to collaborate with PlayStation Studios developers to introduce more benefits for PSN account holders on PC. The future of PSN account linking for other PC games is yet to be determined. Connecting an account will continue to provide benefits like trophy support and friend management.
The reception to Sony's PC gaming initiative has been mixed. While many appreciate the availability of previously console-exclusive titles, the mandatory PSN account requirement drew criticism, particularly in regions where PSN isn't accessible. This was notably highlighted by the initial, short-lived requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam. Sony's reversal on that decision underscores its responsiveness to player feedback.
