Newly surfaced images reveal details about Sony's canceled Twisted Metal game, developed by Firesprite. The leaked screenshots, though blurred and marked "Under NDA," suggest a live-service title blending vehicular combat with battle royale elements under the codename "Project Copper."
A former Firesprite UI developer showcased these images in their online portfolio. While details are scarce, the developer described Project Copper as "a third-person vehicular action combat game based on a classic IP owned by PlayStation and developed by Firesprite," emphasizing "third-person shooter mechanics wrapped with third-person vehicle combat with the objective of being the last one standing."
Sony's cancellation of Twisted Metal, announced alongside layoffs in February 2024, reportedly stemmed from the game's pre-greenlit status. This decision aligns with Sony's broader retreat from live-service games following a period of significant investment. The failure of projects like Concord, a PlayStation Studios live-service hero shooter, and the halting of The Last of Us Online development by Naughty Dog, contributed to this shift in strategy. Sony also canceled two other unannounced live-service games in January 2024.
Despite the game's cancellation, fans can still look forward to the continuation of the Twisted Metal TV series on Peacock, with Season 2 already in the works. IGN awarded Season 1 an 8/10, praising its "miraculously enjoyable blend of comedy, violence, and thoughtfulness," despite occasional overreliance on jokes.
