TouchArcade Rating: Updates for premium mobile ports are usually beneficial for optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update (released an hour ago) for Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Free), Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free), and Resident Evil Village (Free) on iOS and iPadOS introduces an online DRM system. This DRM verifies purchase history upon game launch, checking for ownership of the game and any DLC. Failure to confirm ownership results in game closure. This requires an internet connection every time the game is launched, preventing offline play, a significant drawback from the previous version which allowed offline access.
Pre-update testing confirmed offline functionality. Post-update, the DRM prompt appears, and selecting "no" terminates the game. While this may not affect all players, the addition of this always-online DRM to already-purchased games is problematic. Ideally, Capcom should implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update negatively impacts the recommendation of Capcom's premium mobile ports.
The games offer free trials. You can download Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here.
