Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion collaboration fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 crossover, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.
Where Did It Go Wrong?
The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created by Shift Up, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, necessitating revisions. While the toned-down versions satisfied the licensors, they failed to resonate with players. The resulting outfits, while faithful to the source material, lacked the appeal to incentivize spending on limited-time characters or costumes. Asuka's gacha skin, in particular, was criticized for being too similar to her base model.
Player Feedback:
The collaboration's shortcomings extended beyond the character designs. Players felt a lack of compelling reasons to invest in the limited-time offerings, especially given the underwhelming aesthetic upgrades. The event itself was perceived as drawn-out and uninspired, diluting the game's established identity of bold anime aesthetics and engaging storytelling.
Shift Up acknowledged the negative feedback and pledged to improve future collaborations. The hope is that future content will recapture the essence that made Goddess of Victory: NIKKE successful. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. For more gaming news, check out our coverage of Wuthering Waves' Version 1.4 Update on Android.
