NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, concluding its brief international journey. The game's service will terminate on April 30th, 2025, and in-app purchases along with downloads have already been disabled. Gran Saga, which enjoyed a successful launch in Japan back in 2021, faced challenges when it expanded globally in November 2024. The game struggled to maintain its momentum and lasted just six months before the decision to shut down was made.
The primary reason for Gran Saga's closure appears to be financial instability and the challenge of sustaining a viable service. Despite its initial appeal, the game found it difficult to carve out a space in the fiercely competitive global market, where established games dominate and retain loyal player bases. New entries in the genre need to offer something truly innovative to stand out, a hurdle Gran Saga couldn't overcome outside of Japan.
Gran Saga's shutdown is part of a broader trend where numerous gacha RPGs are closing down. Just last month, I reported on the end of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, and it's not the only recent closure. The oversaturated market makes it increasingly difficult for new or niche games to sustain themselves long-term, as players often prefer sticking with familiar titles.
If you've made purchases in Gran Saga recently and are seeking a refund, you have until May 30th to submit an inquiry. However, refunds may not be possible if you've already used your purchases or due to other store policies.
