Keanu Reeves has given fans the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic "Constantine," confirming that a script for "Constantine 2" is now in development. John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was brought to life by Reeves in the 2005 film following his success with "The Matrix." The movie has since garnered a dedicated fanbase that has been eagerly awaiting a sequel for the past two decades.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves shared exciting news about the project's progress. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,'" Reeves stated. This marks a significant step forward, as the team is now focused on writing the script.
Despite this promising development, it's important to note that "Constantine 2" has not yet been officially greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The project does not appear on the list of confirmed projects for the rebooted DCU, and neither Gunn nor Safran have mentioned it as a potential addition. Therefore, while the news is encouraging, the sequel remains on the edge of becoming a reality.
Reeves also teased that if "Constantine 2" does get made, it will continue in the same universe as the original film. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, humorously adding that John Constantine will face even more torment in the sequel.
Adding to the anticipation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared with ComicBook that the script for "Constantine 2" is already in his inbox. However, he admitted to being "too scared to read it" due to his high hopes for the project. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
