Get ready for the final chapter of MultiVersus as it gears up to shut down after its upcoming 5th Season. Dive in to discover what's in store for Season 5 and what you can expect once the game is no longer available online.
On January 31, 2025, MultiVersus’ official Twitter (X) account broke the news that the game will close its doors permanently on May 30, 2025, following the conclusion of its fifth and final season. In an official blog post on the MultiVersus website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. declared that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Kicking off on February 4, 2025, and running through to May 30, 2025, Season 5 promises to introduce two exciting new characters: DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. According to the blog, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 wraps up, MultiVersus will disappear from digital shelves, no longer available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No official word has been released explaining the decision to shut down MultiVersus.
After Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue enjoying the game locally. This can be done either solo against AI opponents or with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, enabling you to play offline with all the content you've earned or purchased.
As of January 31, 2025, real money transactions for MultiVersus have ceased. Gleamium, the game's premium currency, is no longer purchasable from the online store. However, players can still utilize any remaining Gleamium to unlock in-game content until the end of Season 5.
Launched in public beta in July 2022, MultiVersus offered fans a free-to-play fighting game experience, often likened to the renowned Super Smash Bros., yet setting itself apart with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From its initial beta phase through to June 2023, the game rolled out numerous updates and two full seasons of content. Following a relaunch in May 2024, MultiVersus introduced new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, new currencies, and other enhancements.
Despite these updates, the game struggled to retain player satisfaction, plagued by technical issues, frequent disconnections, and controversial microtransactions. By July 2024, MultiVersus experienced a significant 70% drop in player numbers on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus is set to officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, featuring a roster of 35 playable characters drawn from various beloved franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
