Nintendo has been dropping hints that a new 3D Mario game might be closer than we think, but we'll need to be patient to see it in action. In a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to fans' longing for a new mainline Mario game. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser suggested that fans might not have to wait too long for more news.
"Stay tuned," Bowser advised. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."
Although Bowser's words aren't a solid confirmation of an imminent announcement, they offer a glimmer of hope for fans who were disappointed not to see a new 3D Mario game included in the Nintendo Switch 2's launch lineup. When Nintendo revealed its new hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and others, but a traditional 3D Mario platformer was notably absent.
It's been nearly eight years since the last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, which was released in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch launched. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may temporarily satisfy fans' cravings, many are eagerly awaiting a Super Mario Odyssey 2 announcement. Given Mario's significance in Nintendo's vast catalog, as mentioned by Bowser, it would indeed be surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't surface soon.
For now, the next mainline Mario adventure remains under wraps. As we await further updates, you can explore Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025.
