Project KV, a visual novel developed by former Blue Archive developers, has been cancelled due to significant backlash over its striking resemblance to its predecessor. This article explores the reasons behind the cancellation.
Dynamis One, a studio founded by ex-Blue Archive developers at Nexon Games, announced the cancellation of Project KV on September 9th via Twitter (X). The game, initially generating considerable buzz, faced intense criticism for its close similarities to Blue Archive, a mobile gacha game.
In their statement, Dynamis One apologized for the resulting controversy, acknowledging concerns regarding the game's design and concept mirroring Blue Archive. They committed to avoiding future conflicts and confirmed the removal of all Project KV materials online. The studio expressed regret to supporters and pledged to improve future projects to meet fan expectations.
The cancellation followed the release of two promotional videos: the first on August 18th, introducing the game's premise and voice acting; and a second two weeks later, showcasing characters and story elements. The project's abrupt cancellation a week after the second teaser sparked online celebrations amongst many.
Dynamis One, established in April by former Blue Archive lead Park Byeong-Lim and other key developers, immediately drew attention from the Blue Archive community. The subsequent unveiling of Project KV ignited a firestorm. Fans quickly highlighted the numerous similarities, from aesthetics and music to the core concept: a Japanese-style city populated by female students wielding weapons.
The presence of a "Master" character, reminiscent of Blue Archive's "Sensei," and the use of halo-like adornments above characters – a key visual element in Blue Archive with significant narrative importance – fueled the controversy. Many perceived Project KV as a blatant attempt to capitalize on Blue Archive's success through visual imitation, leading to accusations of plagiarism and the nickname "Red Archive." Speculation even arose that "KV" was an abbreviation for "Kivotos," Blue Archive's fictional city.
While Blue Archive's general producer, Kim Yong-ha, indirectly addressed the situation by sharing a fan post clarifying the lack of official connection between the two projects, the overwhelmingly negative response ultimately led to Project KV's cancellation.
Dynamis One's decision to cancel Project KV without detailed explanation leaves the future of the studio and its approach to future projects uncertain. While some expressed disappointment, many viewed the cancellation as a justified response to the perceived plagiarism.
