Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission unveiled Silent Hill f, a chilling new entry in the beloved horror franchise, transporting players to 1960s Japan.
First announced in 2022, Silent Hill f was described as a game set in a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world. The game's script is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed writer behind the Higurashi and Umineko visual novel series.
Now, we have significantly more details.
Silent Hill f: Finding Beauty in Terror
Konami revealed a new trailer and story details, emphasizing the game's aim to "find the beauty in terror" and present players with a difficult choice within the terrifyingly beautiful landscape of 1960s Japan. While the nature of this choice remains a mystery, the story centers on Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life is irrevocably altered when her town is enveloped in fog and undergoes a horrifying transformation. Hinkao must navigate this unrecognizable world, solving puzzles, battling strange enemies, and ultimately facing a pivotal decision. The official description describes it as "a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice."
This original story offers a compelling entry point for newcomers while including Easter eggs for seasoned fans. The game is set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real-world location of Kanayama, Gero, in Gifu Prefecture.
Creature and character designer, kera, shared their excitement, highlighting the challenges and inspirations behind Silent Hill f's design: "I love the Silent Hill series… constantly remembering Silent Hill 2, the messages on the walls, the music, and the monster designs. So, when it came to Silent Hill f, and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different… The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that's come in Silent Hill before, and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill."
Music plays a crucial role. Long-time Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (known for his work on the *Dynasty Warriors* series) are creating the soundscapes for the Fog World and Otherworld, respectively. Inage describes his approach: "I have composed music for an unsettling yet beautiful world… blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes… various techniques that will connect the player to the protagonist's agony, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions."While a release date remains unannounced, Silent Hill f is confirmed for release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
