Get ready to race with your favorite Sonic characters and more in the exciting new game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Dive into the latest features, mechanics, and details about the upcoming closed network test.
Sega and the Sonic Team are set to deliver an exhilarating kart racing experience with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which boasts the largest roster in the Sonic The Hedgehog series to date. According to Thalia Piedra, Sega of America's Associate PR Manager, in a PlayStation.blog post dated February 12, 2025, the game will feature an impressive lineup of 23 characters at launch, with additional characters planned for future updates.
The trailer showcases beloved characters from the Sonic universe, including Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy, alongside Sonic Riders' Jet, Wave, and Storm. Fans will also spot Zavok and Zazz from the Deadly Six, Team Dark's Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega, and the iconic Dr. Eggman with his creations, Egg Pawn and Metal Sonic. The Chaotix team, with Vector, Charmy, and Espio, joins the roster, rounded out by Blaze, Silver, Cream, and Big.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds introduces innovative gameplay mechanics designed to enhance the racing experience. The centerpiece of these new features is the Travel Rings, which allow characters to shift between different worlds, known as CrossWorlds, in real-time during races. This dynamic feature, as described by Piedra, will dramatically alter races by transporting players from one world to another, offering a theme park-like experience filled with large monsters, engaging obstacles, and breathtaking scenery.
The game also promises dynamic tracks that change with each lap, inspired by the transformative tracks in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. With 24 main tracks and 15 CrossWorlds, players will encounter a fresh challenge with every race.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to offer the most extensive vehicle customization options yet. A Twitter (X) post from the game's official account on February 17, 2025, showcased the customization options, which include modifying the front and rear parts of the vehicle, wheels, and deep color customization for the body, tires, cockpit, and overall glow.
Players will also have the ability to equip their characters with Gadgets, allowing for 23 different power-up items to optimize their racing strategy. The game introduces 45 unique original vehicles, including the return of the fan-favorite Extreme Gear from Sonic Riders, enabling players to race on flying hoverboards with a boost-based style.
Takashi Iizuka, Sonic's Creative Officer, highlighted that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds represents "a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date," promising a comprehensive and thrilling racing experience.
A closed network test for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is scheduled to give fans a sneak peek at the game. Registration opened on February 12, 2025, and will close on February 19, 2025. The test will run from February 21, 2025, to February 24, 2025, worldwide, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
Participants who complete the post-test survey will receive an exclusive in-game sticker and title, adding extra incentive to join the test.
