A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurd comedy show, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this new film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, which has already set a release date of March 20, 2026.
Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" in the project, ensuring a faithful adaptation of the iconic fighting game franchise. This upcoming film marks yet another attempt to bring Street Fighter to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 movie that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While critics may not have been kind at the time, the film has since become a cult classic.
Details on casting are still under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters on the big screen. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer, paving the way for Sakurai's unique, absurdist approach, which could add a fresh, comedic twist to the franchise. As a fan of Street Fighter's more whimsical elements, this direction is certainly exciting.
While we wait for more updates on the film, fans can dive into the latest installment of the game series, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more information, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
