Splash Damage Scraps Transformers: Reactivate After Lengthy Development
The long-awaited Transformers: Reactivate, a 1-4 player online game unveiled at The Game Awards 2022, has been officially canceled by developer Splash Damage. The game, which was to feature a collaborative Autobot and Decepticon effort against a new alien threat, has been plagued by development issues.
While initial excitement surrounded the prospect of playable characters like Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, and Soundwave (suggested by leaks and toy releases), rumors of Beast Wars characters' inclusion remain unfulfilled. The lack of updates following the 2022 trailer fueled speculation of cancellation.
Splash Damage's announcement confirmed the project's termination, citing a difficult decision resulting in potential staff layoffs. The studio expressed gratitude to the development team and Hasbro for their support. Fan reaction has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment while others anticipated the cancellation due to the prolonged silence.
The studio's focus now shifts to "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game utilizing Unreal Engine 5, announced in March 2023 in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. Resources will be redirected to this project, though layoffs are expected due to Transformers: Reactivate's cancellation. This leaves Transformers fans still yearning for a high-quality, AAA game based on the popular franchise.
