LocalThunk's critically acclaimed blend of solitaire, roguelike, and deck-building mechanics, Balatro, has achieved a remarkable milestone: five million sales across all platforms. This includes a significant mobile presence, where it has garnered numerous awards.
While this number might seem modest compared to some mobile gaming giants, it's crucial to remember that Balatro is a solo-developed title, and all five million sales represent premium revenue for developer LocalThunk and publisher Playstack. This makes it a particularly impressive achievement. Precise mobile sales figures aren't currently available, but a substantial increase of 1.5 million sales has been recorded since December, when the total stood at 3.5 million.
While not definitively an indie breakthrough for mobile gaming, Balatro's success is undeniably significant, particularly given its journey to popularity. Its continued success, bolstered by ongoing updates, remains to be seen.
This achievement raises the question: will Balatro's success encourage greater confidence in bringing indie games to mobile platforms? We certainly hope so.
