In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome and character fates.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus' fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.
Spoiler Warning: The following details the game's ending.
Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?
This choice hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain encounter, the Astral Prism presents the choice: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor: This leads to Orpheus' demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may object, impacting their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it may displease players attached to these characters.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer, contradicting the initial goal. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. He may even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.
In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
Morality depends on player perspective, but loyalty is key. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player would naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following him might lead to a Mind Flayer transformation, but a morally sound one. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to a satisfying resolution for everyone.
