Rebel Wolves, a studio comprised of former CD Projekt Red developers, is crafting The Blood of Dawnwalker, an open-world vampire RPG aiming for the quality bar set by The Witcher 3, albeit on a smaller scale. This article delves into the upcoming title and its creators' ambitions.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz clarified the studio's vision. While acknowledging their smaller size and this being their debut project, he emphasized their commitment to AAA-level quality, explicitly referencing The Witcher 3 as their benchmark.
The team, far from inexperienced, boasts a wealth of knowledge gained from working on both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 at CDPR. Rebel Wolves' formation allowed Tomaszkiewicz and his brother Konrad greater creative freedom than working within a larger AAA studio.
Tomaszkiewicz highlighted the game's scope: "Our game isn't as massive in terms of content and playtime – we're a smaller studio, and this is our first project. But we aim for robust quality, even if it's a shorter experience." The target playtime is a 30-40 hour main campaign, a length he argues doesn't automatically disqualify it from AAA status, citing examples like Call of Duty.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is a narrative-driven, open-world dark fantasy RPG set in Vale Sangora. Players assume the role of Coen, a peasant granted vampiric abilities, who embarks on a quest to save his sister while navigating the dangers of this mystical land.
While a release date remains unannounced, the game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a gameplay reveal expected in Summer 2025.
