Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
RGG Studio, the creative force behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing multiple large-scale projects, a feat attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation. This proactive approach allows the studio to explore new IPs and revitalize existing franchises.
RGG Studio's current lineup includes a new IP, Project Century (set in 1915 Japan), unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, and a new Virtua Fighter project, distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster. These ambitious projects, alongside the next Like a Dragon installment and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, highlight Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities. This reflects a strong trust in the studio's talent and a commitment to exploring uncharted creative territory.
Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama credits Sega's culture of risk-taking for these opportunities. He emphasizes Sega's acceptance of potential failure, contrasting it with a solely safety-first approach. Yokoyama points to the creation of Shenmue as an example of this risk-taking spirit, born from the question: "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"
RGG Studio assures fans that the concurrent development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter franchise. Original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and the team, including producer Riichiro Yamada, is committed to delivering an innovative and engaging experience.
Yamada further emphasizes the team's goal: "With the new 'VF,' we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find 'cool and interesting!'" Both Yokoyama and Yamada express their excitement and anticipation for the release of these upcoming titles.
