The developers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have addressed community concerns regarding recent in-game events perceived as promoting "fear of missing out" (FOMO). These events offered limited-time cosmetic items, prompting criticism and comparisons to the often-maligned "live service" model prevalent in many games. While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, the events sparked a backlash due to their timed nature. This concern is amplified by research highlighting the psychological manipulation often used in games to incentivize loot box purchases, including FOMO tactics.

In response to the negative feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive clarified their intentions, stating that Space Marine 2 is not transitioning into a full live service game. They acknowledged the FOMO concerns raised by the community events and reassured players that all event items will be made available again at a later date. The developers apologized for the negative experience and are working to simplify the item acquisition process. As a gesture of goodwill, they are offering the Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through a challenging community event) for free to players who link their PROS accounts. The upcoming 7.0 update will introduce new content, including a weapon, map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, addressing previous concerns about content scarcity. Space Marine 2 continues to see success, having achieved record-breaking sales figures since its launch.
