This Western Tamang-Nepali dictionary is a collaborative project by Western Tamang speakers from several Nepali districts. It offers a valuable resource for comparative linguistic study, as each Tamang word (source language) is translated into Nepali (target language).
Tamang, a Tibeto-Burman language, boasts a significant number of speakers in Nepal, ranking fifth in the 2011 census. While primarily spoken around the Kathmandu Valley, Tamang communities exist throughout the country. The dictionary focuses on the Western Tamang dialect, spoken in districts west of the Trisuli River, contrasting with the Eastern Tamang dialect. The Western dialect, also known as "Nhurba" or "Nhuppa," is facing the challenge of declining usage due to the increasing dominance of Nepali. This dictionary aims to contribute to the preservation and promotion of this vital language.
According to oral traditions, Western Tamang communities migrated to Nepal from Tibet. Cultural practices, such as the upward placement of deceased bodies, reflect this history and unique worldview.
This bilingual dictionary represents a crucial step in safeguarding Western Tamang. The developers welcome feedback and suggestions for future improvements.
