Palworld CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about the game's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning to a live service model. The interview revealed a careful consideration of the pros and cons for Palworld's fans and the company's bottom line.
Mizobe confirmed that while concrete plans are still pending, future updates are guaranteed. These updates will include new maps, Pals, and raid bosses. However, the long-term vision for Palworld involves a crucial decision: remain a buy-to-play (B2P) title, or transition to a live service model (LiveOps).
Mizobe explained the inherent differences between the two models. B2P offers complete access after a single purchase, while live service games typically monetize through ongoing content releases. He acknowledged that, from a business perspective, a live service model offers greater profit potential and longevity. However, he also highlighted the significant challenges involved, primarily because Palworld wasn't originally designed for this model.
A key consideration is player preference. Mizobe pointed out the typical live service model transition involves a pre-existing free-to-play (F2P) game adding paid content. Palworld's B2P structure makes this a complex undertaking, requiring careful consideration of the impact on the existing player base. He cited examples like PUBG and Fall Guys, highlighting the years it took them to successfully transition to F2P and live service models.
Mizobe also addressed alternative monetization strategies, such as ad integration. However, he dismissed this option for Palworld, citing the difficulties in adapting it to a PC game and the potential negative reaction from Steam players. He noted the strong aversion many PC gamers have towards in-game advertising.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on attracting new players and retaining existing ones. The recent Sakurajima update, including the highly anticipated PvP arena, represents their current approach. Ultimately, the decision regarding Palworld's future direction remains under careful consideration. The game is still in early access, and the future will depend on a balance of financial viability and player satisfaction.
