Microsoft's evolving multiplatform strategy is evident in its recent Xbox showcases, which now prominently feature PlayStation 5 logos alongside Xbox platforms for select games. This marks a significant shift from Microsoft's June 2024 showcase, where PS5 announcements were often handled separately or omitted entirely from the main event. The inclusion of PS5 in recent showcases, as seen with titles like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, reflects a commitment to transparency about game availability.
This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's continued focus on their respective platforms. Their showcases maintain a platform-centric approach, often excluding mention of competing consoles even for multiplatform titles, as exemplified by recent State of Play presentations.
Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this strategic change in an interview with XboxEra, emphasizing the importance of transparency and ensuring players know where to find their games. He acknowledged the logistical challenges of coordinating assets across platforms but stressed a desire for openness. Spencer highlighted that while not all platforms offer equal opportunities (referencing limitations on closed platforms), the focus remains on maximizing game reach.
Spencer's statement suggests we can anticipate seeing more PS5 and, eventually, Nintendo Switch 2 logos in future Xbox showcases. This might include titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the upcoming Call of Duty at Microsoft's June 2025 showcase. However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
