Ubisoft Montreal is developing a new voxel-based game, codenamed "Alterra," blending the building mechanics of Minecraft with the social simulation aspects of Animal Crossing. This exciting project, reportedly born from a previously cancelled title, features a unique gameplay loop centered around charming creatures called "Matterlings."
Players will interact with these Matterlings, reminiscent of Funko Pops with large heads and diverse designs inspired by both fantasy creatures and real-world animals, on a home island. Beyond their island haven, players can explore various biomes, gathering resources for construction and encountering challenges. The game's voxel-based design allows for intricate building, with different biomes providing unique building materials. A forest biome, for example, offers plentiful wood.
The project, in development for over 18 months, is led by producer Fabien Lhéraud (a 24-year Ubisoft veteran) and creative director Patrick Redding (known for his work on titles like Gotham Knights and Far Cry 2).
While details remain scarce, the game promises a unique blend of exploration, building, and social interaction within a visually distinct voxel world. Remember, this information is preliminary and subject to change.
Understanding Voxel Games:
Voxel games utilize small cubes or pixels to construct 3D environments, unlike polygon-based games that use triangles. This creates a distinct visual style and allows for precise manipulation of the game world. While Minecraft uses a voxel-like aesthetic, it's not technically a voxel game; "Alterra," however, is designed from the ground up with true voxel technology.
This contrasts with the polygon-based rendering found in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, where objects are formed from triangles. Voxel games, like "Alterra," offer a unique approach to world building and interaction, providing a potentially exciting new gaming experience.
