CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive world populated by believable characters.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba outlined their new philosophy: “Every NPC should look like they are living their own life with their own story.”
This vision is evident in the debut trailer, showcasing the secluded village of Stromford. Villagers adhere to local superstitions, worshipping a forest deity. One scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.
Kalemba further elaborated: “We aim to make NPCs as realistic as possible—from appearance to facial expressions and behavior. This will create an even deeper immersion than before. We're really trying to set a new bar for quality.”
The developers intend for each village and character to possess unique traits and narratives, reflecting the beliefs and customs of isolated communities.
The Witcher 4's release is slated for 2025, and anticipation is high among fans eager to learn more about the game's innovative approach to world-building and character design.
